The needle used musthave a very large eye, as the material is always damaged at the eye due to its nature. 

When inserting and pulling out, it is gentlest on the thread if you hold the thread and the eye of the needle together. If the eye of the needle with the thread cannot be easily pulled through the fabric, twist the eye of the needle slightly between your thumb and forefinger and turn it upwards through the fabric… like a screw…
